Antiquities Of Herculaneum

The Antiquities of Herculaneum is a  vast collection of images of archeological finds from the excavation of the
Roman cities of Herculaneum and Pompeii. The cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum were buried when Mount
Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD. In contrast to Pompeii, the resort town of Herculaneum was smaller with a
wealthier population. Excavations began in Ercolano, in 1738.  Later, under the patronage of  the King of the
Two Sicilies, the beginning of this elaborate 8 volume collection was published. The images in this collection
became very popular and led the way to the neo-classical style. Many consider this publication to be the most
important archaeological work of the eighteenth century.

The engravings that we will be offering are from the books published between 1757-1779.

These are not reproductions, but original 18th century copperplate engravings on handmade paper.
